Welcome

Salutations and welcome to the Lab. My name is Shamus Murphy and I am a third year student at University of Vermont studying Math and Computer Science.

This site is a compilation of my notes, projects, and research that I contribute to frequently. There is no strict organization or anywhich way you should go about reading it.

The work shown on this site will be from this semester and onward. Some of my previous projects can be found on my github but I want to focus on my current interests and build off of them.

My Focus

My primary academic interests lie in Cybersecurity, Data Privacy, and Cryptography. With individuals submitted more and more of their data (knowingly and unknowingly) online, I want to be apart of the force that strives to protect users while making sure they understand what is happening to their data.

Future Research: Differential Privacy

Next semester, I will be working as an undergraduate research assistant with Associate Professor Joe Near researching various topics pertaining to differential privacy.

Current Project: Differentially Diagnosed

In this project, I took a medical dataset off of Kaggle to train a neural network to determine diabetes diagnosis in patients. Implementing differential privacy, I compare different values of epsilon and observe the trade-offs between privacy and utility. I am now reshaping my model architecture as well as perfoming more in-depth analysis.

My Life Outside of Academia

Outside of my academic work, I am a ski bum. I try to go skiing anytime possible and most days, especially over breaks, you will find me skiing in Vermont. Reading is something I try to consistently do as much as possible. Whether it’s for enjoyment or education. During the semesters I usually slow down but right now I am reading Dune and Geniuses of War. Music is also a huge part of my life and I can play the drums, piano, and guitar (in descending order of skill).
